Elizabeth School District Approves Independence Classical Academy, a New Tuition-Free K-8 Charter School Set to Open in Fall 2025

Elizabeth, CO – November 22, 2024 – The Elizabeth School District Board of Education voted on Monday, October 28, to approve Independence Classical Academy (ICA), a new K-8 public charter school, marking the launch of Elbert County's first classical academy. This innovative, tuition-free educational institution is scheduled to open in Fall 2025 and will initially serve grades K-5, with plans to add one grade level each year until reaching 8th grade.

Modeled after the esteemed Liberty Common Charter School in Fort Collins, which has demonstrated significant academic success since its founding in 1997, ICA’s classical curriculum emphasizes a back-to-fundamental principles, focused on math, science, language, civic responsibility, and character development. Liberty Common’s success, including achieving the highest composite SAT scores in Colorado last spring, has inspired this initiative and underscores the proven effectiveness of a classical education in promoting academic excellence.

Initially, ICA will operate temporarily in the former Frontier High School building located in downtown Elizabeth, CO. Meanwhile, construction of its permanent campus is underway in the new Independence neighborhood near the intersection of County Road 158 and Delbert Road, just west of the Douglas County line.

“This approval marks a significant step forward in our commitment to bringing high-quality, classical education to our community. ICA is excited to welcome families in the coming year, offering a rigorous, values-driven curriculum that fosters both academic excellence and character development,” said ICA Board Chair Candy Putch. “We are thrilled that the Elizabeth School District Board of Education voted to approve this local charter effort by parents and community members.”

The approval of Independence Classical Academy promises to bring a rich, foundational education option to Elbert County families, creating new opportunities for students to thrive academically and grow as responsible, engaged citizens.
